Hi everyone!
It's a been a full year (and then some) since I last updated the blog and boy what a year it has been!
Things have been incredibly busy for me these last 12 months, but I still wanted to do this year's APAHM Project, especially because we have so many great films and series to highlight! However, as April flew by, I found that curating a list of 31 AAPI centered media was becoming more of a chore than it was a creative endeavor. I was definitely enthused, but found myself with little to no time to put in the amount of energy and thought that I wanted. After a last-minute trip to NYC that dipped into the first week of May, I knew that I needed to pivot. I didn't want to just put out any list (although a calendar was made for the full 31 days). So this year, we are celebrating 7 days of AAPI films instead of 31. (For those unfamiliar with The APAHM Project, you can read about it here.)
Last year's APAHM Project was a huge success! I integrated television series into our calendar and brought along some friends for the ride! And thanks to your social media engagement, we were able to donate a total of $254 to 15 different GoFundMe's ranging from helping families whose loved ones were injured or killed in Asian Hate related crimes to providing pepper spray to elderly Asians in NYC.
Other than having less days for this year's lineup, I am also introducing guest writers and we are also highlighting our favorite small Asian-owned businesses! Be sure to support them by checking out their shops! Additionally, all likes on Instagram and individual blog posts will be matched and a donation will be made to CAPE - Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment. CAPE is a nonprofit that works towards the advancement of AAPI representation behind and in front of the camera. Through proper representation on screens, I hope we are able to open the narrative that Asian stories are worthy of telling and that we are people too.
Without further adieu, here is your 7 day lineup for The APAHM Project 2022!
These films and TV shows were picked based on the following criteria:
Written/Directed/Produced by an East Asian, Southeast Asian, or Pacific Islander American or
Has an East Asian, Southeast Asian, or Pacific Islander American in a Leading Role or
Was chosen by a guest!
Additionally, films preferably need to be accessible through popular streaming sites for easy viewing.
This list does not include:
Foreign films
Sequels, unless it had a great significance
I am very excited to watch these movies! I tried to make the AAPI voices as diverse as possible given the smaller list. I've only seen 3 of these films before so I am looking forward to watching and writing about these!
Happy APAHM everyone! Remember our stories and lives are worth celebrating every day. Take up space, stand up for yourself and others, and together we will rise!
